Heard a part of a show on xm yesterday from 9-19-09. The band sounded great. I saw The Dead at the Forum in May and really enjoyed the show but I think Furthur is a better band from what I heard yesterday. They are not the Grateful Dead but who cares. Phil and Bobby are 14 years older than they were when Jerry died. I actually liked the songs that John sang. It is obvious the band is having fun.

Looks like Jeff Mattson is stepping in/has stepped in.

Glad to hear everyone in DSO was excited for John.

I really liked BH in the GD. He added a lot and inspired the band. He was in The Other Ones for both the '98 and '00 tours. After the '00 tour ended (or before?) he claimed that TOOs were just a nostalgia act. At the time I was incensed by that comment (though the '00 Denver show was pretty lame). However, having Kadlecik join The Dead (not Furthur) is as nostalgia act as you can get. Why are Phil & Bob so desperate to recapture Jerry's sound? I think Phil's shows have been excellent (especially with Jackie Greene) and there was no attempt to have a Jerry clone in any of those line ups. Plus, the Denver Dead show in May was bland and it wasn't Warren’s fault. Would it have been a better show if he tried to sound more Jerry-like? Absolutely not. I realize this post is a little rambling. I think I’m just bummed out that they are essentially ending their careers doing the one thing I never thought they did: sell-out. But what’s worse is that it’s not even selling out for the money. It’s like they’re selling out to not being able to make their own brand of GD music anymore. What a shame IMHO. e

If you had Hornsby on board at least you'd have interpretations rather than facsimiles.

You can't replace Jerry and shouldn't even try, which is why the whole Furthur enterprise just left me cold. But finding new ways to approach the songs and keep the music alive is completely different and I support that. Copycatting Jerry is just zombie Dead.

John was a good fit for the band and he'll be missed, but it's really not that big of a deal. Their Jerry clone leaves and they find another one. Menudo carried on in a similar fashion for years!

I think 2010 is going to have him with The Dead on a grand scale tour. Warren can only do so much, with Gov't Mule as his main band. It will give Bobby a chance to go back to doing just his own songs, instead of F'ing up Jerry's tunes.

I think we'll have to agree to disagree on that one - though I never was too big of a Ratdog fan either...
